The unpublished Flora of New Zealand treatment for Bartramiaceae lists various differences between Bartramia papillata and Bartramia robusta and considers Bartramia robusta a New Zealand endemic. In an Australasian context it is better to adopt the narrower concept of Bartramia robusta of the New Zealanders and recognise Bartramia papillata as an separate species, also because Bartramia papillata is the name the species has been described under by Scott & Stone (1976). Australian records of Bartramia ithyphylla and Bartramia robusta are therefore best considered Bartramia papillata.
